Three things Cyprus has that the rest of the Mediterranean does not.

Beaches and old stones belong to every island in this sea. A lagoon with no road to it, ten painted churches on one mountain, and a ferry lying on her side in clear water belong to this one.

Akamas water

The Blue Lagoon

The lagoon sits inside the Akamas peninsula, where the tarmac ends. Nothing paved reaches it: boats run out of Latchi and Paphos harbour, and the dirt tracks stop well short of the water. Most cruises drop anchor for an hour of swimming, and the ones that leave earliest get the bay before the rest of the fleet arrives.

Above the heat

The Troodos Villages

An hour above the coast the road starts winding and the temperature drops. Omodos, Lefkara and Kakopetria keep their presses, their lace and their own bottles, the painted Byzantine churches along these ridges are UNESCO-listed, and Kykkos monastery is the stop most mountain days are built around.

Off Larnaca

The Zenobia

A Swedish ferry that rolled onto her side off Larnaca in 1980 and took her entire cargo of lorries down with her. She lies between roughly 16 and 42 metres in clear water, ten minutes out from the marina, and divers put her among the finest wreck dives anywhere.

Ayia Napa & Protaras

The east coast of Cyprus runs on boats and sea caves.

Cape Greco sits between the two resorts, its cliffs cut through with caves you can swim straight into. Boats leave both harbours through the morning for Turtle Cove and the lagoon, and the water off Protaras is the clearest diving on the island.

Troodos

Cyprus keeps its wine and its painted churches up in the mountains.

Omodos, Lefkara and Kakopetria sit an hour above the coast and several degrees cooler, with village presses still selling their own bottles and lace sold off the doorstep. Almost every mountain day pairs two or three villages with Kykkos monastery and lunch under a vine.

When it hits 38 degrees

A Cypriot August is a heat problem, and the island answers it with water and altitude.

July and August run well past 35 inland, and the ancient sites offer almost no shade. Every good answer is either wet or high up: a boat with a slide off the stern, a dive site at twenty metres, a village where the air actually moves. Take the sightseeing early and give the afternoon to the sea.

Plan ahead

Book these before you land in Cyprus.

Most of the island can be arranged at a harbour kiosk the night before. These cannot. They run on certification cards, checkpoint queues, permits and boats that only hold a handful of people.

  1. 01Private Diving at Zenobia Wreck in LarnakaDive boats out to the wreck take a handful of divers at a time, and the operator wants your certification details when you book.
  2. 02Ayia Napa/Protaras/Larnaka: Famagusta and Salamis Day TripThe route crosses the buffer zone, so every passenger is checked at the crossing point. Carry the passport you flew in on.
  3. 03Blue Lagoon (Akamas) Bus & Boat Tour with Water Slide from PaphosNothing paved goes past Latchi. Reaching the peninsula means a boat or an operator running four-wheel drives, not a hire car on a dirt track.
  4. 04Luxury Yacht Cruise with slide, BBQ Lunch & DrinkA yacht day is one booking for the whole boat. Through July and August the good skippers are gone weeks out.

Cyprus saves its best hour for six until eight.
